Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to follow the development of technology in the Czech cinema after 1945, with special attention to color and widescreen technologies. The historical period to be examined reaches its end before the mid 60s, although in some cases brief time overlaps could be necessary. We will examine texts dealing with the technology of the period and try to identify and explain possible changes. Furthermore, we will focus on the centralized aims and regulations involved in making the technologies available for use by the filmmakers. We will try to identify the practice of inserting the technologically different movies into the dramaturgy plans and the ways in which the technology was connected with other aspects of cinema. Briefly, we will follow the distribution practices of the period, especially where the film was offered in a format different from the original format to the spectators.
