Course objectives
The series of lectures and screenings will provide basic information on the history of Czech animated film from their early stages to the present and on possible theoretical approaches useful in the research of animation. Emphasis will be placed on providing clear basic information about techniques, personalities and films and on thinking about animation in a variety of theoretical frameworks. The development of the medium of animation in the broader cultural context of Czechoslovak and Czech cinema will be observed.
Learning outcomes
Students will gain a basic orientation in the history of Czech animated film and its creators. They will understand the importance of this medium in the broader context of Czechoslovak cinema. Students will be encouraged to think about Czech animated film in terms of many theoretical approches. Lectures and screenings will expand the existing knowledge of Czech animated films by lesser-known films.

  • Animation techniques, prehistory of animation
  • Irena and Karel Dodal, commercial vs. artistic animation
  • Protectorate and post-war reorganization
  • Prague studios of animated film, Brothers in T-shirt
  • Jiří Trnka, Hermína Týrlová, Karel Zeman
  • Animated film and (children's) audience, animated film as an apolitical and escapist film, legislative understanding of animated film
  • Changes in distribution with the advent of TV, TV bedtime cartoons, studios of Hermína Týrlová and Karel Zeman
  • Jiří Brdečka, Břetislav Pojar, Jan Švankmajer, changes after the revolution
