Course objectives
The aim of the seminar will be to introduce students to animated films produced during the period of nationalised cinema. Through seminar classes focusing on various aspects of animated film - production, distribution, exhibition, film techniques, shooting conditions, etc. students will learn about the field of animation from the industrial perspective. The study curriculum thus 1) extends the knowledge acquired on the history of Czech cinema and 2) develops students' independent research skills through the processing of assigned tasks.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the specifics of animated film production in the state-socialist system
- identify and describe the basic problems associated with the technical background for film production
- name the specific problems of individual animation techniques
- understand the impact of the changing political situation on film production
- identify the sub-themes associated with the problems of distribution of animated films in a given period
- analyse selected topics independently

  • - dramaturgy - program and commissioned film, television and nightclubs, co-productions
  • - distribution of short films - cinema, festivals, programme composition
  • - animation film studios - facilities, location in the city
  • - origin, development and function of individual professions - production crew leader, dramaturg, director, animator
  • - prominent personalities and their teams of collaborators - Gene Deitch, Zdeněk Miller, Josef Kábrt, Josef Kluge, etc.
