Course objectives
Students should be able to describe and characterize the basic types and editions of sources, the most important Czech and foreign works (studies) and journals addicted to early modern history; define and explain the general terms and problems of early modern period; summarize the basic knowledge of the legal, administrative, economy and social history, as well as the results of the historical climatology, geography and demography; explain the early modern conception of time and space, as well as its variations among different social strata; compare the situation in Czech lands and Europe. Students are also continuously prepared in the field of early modern paleography.

  • Methodology, Czech and foreign historiography.
  • Types and editions of sources.
  • The early modern period (aspects, processes, chronology).
  • Time and space; territorial development of Czech lands.
  • Early modern man. Demography of Europe and Czech lands.
  • European society - social stratification.
  • Early modern legal system.
  • Administration – central authorities, lands, counties, local authorities (landlords, towns, villages).
  • Economy.
  • Piety.
  • Continuous reading and interpretation of an original (czech written) document, as well as analysis of edited early modern texts.
