Course objectives

The basic areas of research will be the structure and composition of the absolutist court, ceremonies and other ostentatious displays of the Baroque court, the economic and personal provision of the court, the behaviour of the travelling court, the court’s function in the running of the state, the court gentry and the landed gentry.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will: describe the life in the Baroque court, prinicpally in Central Europe and in France, and interpret of primary sources. From this there will develop further analyses of issues, which will be looked at in the wider context of contemporary research.
