Course objectives
The aim of the subject is the historical-philosophical and methodological entry to the issue of history and historiography of the Early Modern Period in Western, Central and Southern Europe. To analyse selected general terms and problems concerning the studied period. To introduce the basic knowledge not only from legal, administrative, economic and social history of the 16th-18th centuries, but also the results of historical climatology, geography and demography. To concentrate attention on the influence of the Renaissance and Reformation on European society.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the students are able to describe the basic types and editions of the sources on early modern history, to define and clarify the importance of new media. To explicate the perception of time and space and their transformations in the individual social classes. To dscribe and clarify the level and transformations of the demographic, legal, administrative, economic and social conditions of the population of the Czech lands and compare it with the situation in Europe. To identify and characterise the importance of the Renaissance and Reformation for Early Modern European society.
Syllabus
  • Introduction, methodology, types and editions of sources, domestic and foreign historiography. The Early Modern Period as an epoch (aspects, processes, chronology.
  • Time and space. Two Worlds: South and North. Two Worlds: Europe and Overseas.
  • Real and symbolic space.
  • The Person of the Early Modern Period. Demography of Europe and the Czech Lands. Individual and communication. Individual and society: intimate and public. Memoirs and self-portraits.
  • Book printing as a new medium. Newspapers as a new medium.
  • Modernity and law, administration and economics.
  • The New World and the Renaissance. The Italian Renaissance. The Italian model and the European Renaissance.
  • The Modern Period and the Reformation. The German Reformation: Pluralism of thought, discussion as a method of learning of the world? Reformation in the World: The end of universal society? Piety.
