Course objectives
The course aims at achieving an understanding of the principal paradigms of 19th century history, focusing on such issues as the Eastern question; the position and role of the Russian empire during the period of power expansionism, imperialism and colonialism; the formation of modern nationalism and the ideas of Eastern European socialism; and putting these paradigms into the general context of European and world history.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn of the crucial political, economic and social trends, and schools of thought in the 19th century history, and acquire the ability to explain their special effect within the Eastern European milieu. Students will also acquire the ability to analyze and compare the events and schools of thought between Western and Eastern Europe, while putting events in the general European and often worldwide context.
