Friedrich II. Sicilský se v mnohém lišil od soudobých vladařů a snad také proto byl svými příznivci nazván "stupor mundi". Jako oboustranný sirotek prožil dramatické dětství, jen s nemalou dávkou štěstí nebyl připraven o sicilské dědictví, aby se roku 1212 po dramatické pouti do říše ujal svého dědictví, římské říše. Pokusil se o nemožné, sjednotit německé a italské části říše v jeden celek. Záhy však poznal marnost svého snažení a po roce 1227 se věnoval správě sicilského království. Dostal se však do konfliktu s římskou kurií a poslední léta svého života strávil boji v Toskánsku.
