Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are the following: improving students geographical orientation; acquainting them with the changes of territories and its populations during the history. Graduates will be also able to work with topography handbooks in history research.
Syllabus
  • Historical geography as a field of study. Historical topography as an auxiliary historical discipline.
  • Territorial and administrativ organization of the czech state and its boundaries since middle ages until present time.
  • Historical territories of Europe and its boundaries.
  • Accordance of the geografical names in different languages.
  • Topography and local history. Tradition of the czech and moravian topographical studies. Topographical handbooks and their use in history research.
  • Lanscape and its physical and cultural changes in history.
  • Written and other sources, maps, cartography, pictures.
  • Geographical mobility of population. History and typology of migrations.
  • Demographical approaches in history research. Historical demography and its relation to other disciplines.
  • History of population in the czech territories.
  • Social and national structure of czech population and its changes in the history.
