Course objectives
Course focuses on history of Russia and Eastern Europe in general since the downfall of Tsarist Russia until the death of Lenin. Creation, development and rise to power of communist movement is also part of the course. Students are supposed to get basic survey of East European and Russian history during first few decades of 20th century, as well as the ability to understand these events into a broader context.

  • Russia in 18th and 19th centuries; Russia under the last of the Czars; emergence and development of Russian socialism; revolution of 1905; Russia in the Great War; Lenin in emigration; February revolution; Provisional government; coup de etat of November 1917; war communism; CHEKA; the Civil War; wars of re-unification; the Third Internationale and efforts of exporting the communism abroad; war communism in crisis; NEP; creation of the USSR; stabilization; Lenin’s illness, death, and following struggle for succession
