Course objectives
The course is focused on historical and political development of the First Slovak Republic in 1939-1945. On successful completion of the course, students will be able to characterize the political tendencies and processes that formed the development of Slovakia during the Second World War. Next to it, they will be able to evaluate both Czech and foreign literature on the subject of the course and to utilize their analytical skills in a seminar essay.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introductory lesson, review of the subject.
  • 2. Slovaks in the First Czechoslovak Republic.
  • 3. Development during the so-called Second Czecho-Slovak Republic and Slovak political autonomy in 1938-1939.
  • 4. Creation of the quasi-independent Slovak State on 14 march 1939 and its political system.
  • 5. Foreign policy of the First Slovak Republic.
  • 6. Persecution of the jewish population.
  • 7. Slovak military operations in World War II.
  • 8. Economical and social development of Slovakia in 1939-1945.
  • 9. Everyday life in Slovakia and Slovak society.
  • 10. Slovak National Uprising in 1944, myths and reality.
  • 11. The liberation of Slovakia by the Soviet army and the end of the First Slovak Republic.
  • 12. Final lesson and discussion about the geopolitical position of Slovakia in the system of client states of Nazi Germany in Europe.

Teaching methods
The course is carried out in form of seminars. Regular attendance is required. In the framework of seminar sessions, students will also have to work with related archive materials and discuss their essays.
Assessment methods
The classification will evaluate attendance which will be proved by signatures on attendance lists. The students will also have to write an seminar essay on one of the given topics. The final exam will be in the form of a written test examining the student's elementary knowledge of the subject.
