Course objectives
Students will gain a basic orientation in  the history of Ukraine, Russia and the USSR from the formation of the modern Ukrainian nation until 1991.
Learning outcomes
Students will acquire a basic overview of  history of East-Central and Eastern Europe from the end of the 18th to the end of the 20th century. Gains an overview of social, cultural, ethnic and political development of Ukraine in  Central and Eastern Europe. Gains an overview of  crucial milestones in Ukrainian history after 1917.

  • Ukraine in 19th century and before WW1
  • Efforts to  the establishment of an independent state 1917-1921
  • Korenization, collectivization and famine
  • The Rise of Ukrainian Nationalism in  the Interwar Period
  • Ukraine in  WW2 years, Volhynia, UPA
  • Situation in Ukraine from 1945 to the mid-fifties
  • Resistance to the regime, Chernobyl, the collapse of the USSR and the emergence of an independent Ukraine
