Course objectives
The goal of the seminar is to acquaint students with the lives, and social and ritual roles of the wives of the late Byzantine emperors. On the examples of individual princesses we will, for example, inquire into the problems of a foreign princess, what possibilities opened to an empress desiring educatio and what was expected from a lady in her position. We will also inquire into the ceremonies connected with the arrival of the new empress and consider how these women impacted political events of late Byzantium and vice versa.
Learning outcomes
-understand important issues connected with women of the late Byzantine court -understand the connections between the lives of these privileged women and contemporary events -describe the rituals associated with the lives of empresses -understand the basic context of late Byzantine history
