Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint the audience with the history of the (provincial) Bohemian nobility in the years 1848-1918.The lectures will be divided into four main parts: an introduction to the topic, a chronological overview, thematic lectures and the history of selected noble families, during which the audience will use the knowledge acquired in the previous parts of the course.
Learning outcomes
The graduate of the course will understand the history of the noble community in the Czech lands in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The student will be able to think about the events that influenced the development of the noble community in the broader context of Central European development. At the same time, the student will learn how to work with literature and sources that play a crucial role in researching the modern Czech nobility.

  • The course outline will be as follows: 1. Introductory session (introduction to the course objectives and syllabus, student expectations) 2. Basic terminology for the study of the history of nobility 3. Sources and literature on the history of the nobility 4. History of the nobility in the 19th and 20th centuries. 5. The everyday life of the nobility 6. Nobility and politics 7. Nobility and business 8. The New Nobility of the Habsburg Monarchy 9. Research into the history of the nobility using the Kálnoky family as an example 10. Research on the history of the nobility on the example of the Wilczek family 11. Nobility in the 21st century: the final lesson

Teaching methods
The course has three different methodological forms: lecture, seminar and practical. The lecture form is carried out by the lecturer, while the seminar form involves the students through the presentation of their seminar papers in the form of reports. The practical form is realized by joint discussion over contemporary texts and illustrations.
