Course objectives

The aim of the subject is to acquaint the students with the history of the Romani ethnic groups on the territory of Bohemia and Moravia from the arrival of the Romani from India, with a special emphasis on the period from the first historical reports of the Romani in Central Europe, through the history of coexistence within individual epochs, to the history of the extinction of the original Romani population in the Nazi period. It will also touch on the post-war immigration of the Romani and their position within Communist policy to the present. Other themes of the course will be Romani material and spiritual culture, e.g. artistic, literary and musical culture. The lectures take place in the spaces of the Museum of Romani Culture with the usage of the collection items and the exhibition projects of this institution and will be participated in by the specialized employees of the museum. In the practical part, the students will be directly engaged in the activities of the museum.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
- characterize the main stages of the historical development of Romani society in the Czech lands
- specify the basic periodic milestones in the history of the Romani
- to orient in the issue of the Romani holocaust
- to describe the specifics of Romani culture

- Splnění docházky (omluvena max. jedna absence na přednáškách, omluvy zasílejte Mgr. Anně Míškové (holokaust@rommuz.cz) - Student si dále může vybrat, zda absolvuje praxi v Muzeu romské kultury (do konce zkouškového období příslušného semestru) v rozsahu 30 hodin praxe, anebo vypracuje recenzi na knihu, kterou odevzdá do 31. 5. 2023 (studenti obdrží na začátku kurzu seznam literatury, ze které si budou moci vybrat, případně po schválení si mohou vybrat i jinou publikaci dle svého zájmu a uvážení). Recenze dále mohou být nabídnuty k publikování do Bulletinu Muzea romské kultury.
