Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get the students familiar with the forms and specifics of music of the 19th century, which is to a certain extent identical with the term "romanticism". The students will be able to understand and explain the key forms as symphony, song, string quartet and more, and the character of music production of this time (instrumentation, programmatic vs. absolute music etc.).
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to recognize and analyze various stylistic tendencies and musical forms of the 19th century.
Syllabus
  • 1. A symphony of the early romanticism. L. van Beethoven and a prototype of the 19th century symphony. F. Schubert: an example of the early romantic symphony. 2. Virtuosity as a 19th century phenomenon (H. Ernst, N. Paganini, F. Liszt ad.). A genius phenomenon. Changing the positions between author and interpreter. 3. Programme symphony of the 19th century. Metamorphoses of the programme symphony between high classicism and modernity. (F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, H. Berlioz, A. Bruckner, L. Janáček). 4. Song as a representative form of the romanticism. Solo song, choir production, Lieder ohne Worte (F. Schubert, L. Janáček, V. Novák). 5. Orchestration development. Instrumentarium of the romantic orchestra (Beethoven), Berlioz's reform and a charakteristic of instrumentation. Novelty of modernity. Scores of R. Strauss and G. Mahler, wagnerian melodics. Specifics of the Janáček's instrumentation. 6. Basic works of the Czech quartet literature in the period od romanticism (string quartets by B. Smetana and A. Dvořák). Problem of programme, autobiographical reflection. 7. Parallels to the Janáček's operatic production. M. P. Musorgskij (Boris Godunov) and R. Strauss (Salome). "Literatur Oper" (C. Dahlhaus) and "Exteritoriale Musik" (T. Adorno). 8. Metamorphoses of the decadence – between literature (T. Mann), music (G. Mahler) and film (L. Visconti). The Death in Venice - metamorphoses of the story, quotation (B. Britten). 9. Professional and personal life of G. Mahler. Institutions keeping his heritage.
