Course objectives
The seminar focuses on a hands-on approach to the translation of short texts from Italian to Czech, emphasizing especially aspects of morphology, syntax and style.
Syllabus
  • A theoretical introduction: Morphosyntactic aspects of translation – confronting Italian and Czech. Stylistic aspects of translation – journalistic, technical, essayistic and fictional styles. Translator training methods: Studying comparable texts in the source and target languages, setting up a database of terms and collocations in the foreign language, dictionary work, proofreading options. Translation of short texts from Italian to Czech. Practicing translation from Czech into Italian. Comparing various versions created by students.

Assessment methods
Seminar attendance is mandatory. A minimal attendance of 2/3 of all sessions is required. In case of absence it is – in exceptional cases – possible to only submit the written homework prepared for a given session. Such written assignments must be handed in beforehand.
