Course objectives
The purpose of the course is to help students to streghten their reading and speaking skills, by expanding their vocabulary and experimenting with more complex grammatical structures.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students: expand their vocabulary; advantage their understanding of several morphological and syntactic aspects of Italian; have a direct knowledge of some Italian literary texts.
Syllabus
  • "Stories of Elsewhere" During the course, students will read and discuss works by Italian writers who wrote about real and imaginary coutries other than Italy: Fosco Maraini, Dacia Maraini, Emilio Salgari, Italo Calvino, Guido Piovene, Massimo Zamboni, Paolo Zanotti, Angelo Maria Ripellino, Claudio Magris, Giorgio Amitrano, Dante. Particularly the following semester, they will be read texts regarding Dante's voyage written by contemporary writers and scholars. Together with the teacher, students will also read some passages of Dantes' "Commedia".
Literature
  • Instructor will provide students with handouts related to the readings on the topics covered by the course.
Teaching methods
The course will be conducted in Italian. Literary texts will be read in Italian. Students will receive weekly reading assignments and will be expected to actively participate in the class discussions. Students are strongly suggested to attend the departmental seminars on Italian literature taught by visiting professors.
Assessment methods
Final oral presetation and active participation in class discussions.
