Course objectives

Basic notions and problems in semantics illustrated mainly on Italian linguistic material.

Syllabus

Basic notions in semantics (langue, parole, code, sign, signifiant, signifié, etc.); theory of tropes (Aristotle, Vico, Ullmann); classification of semantic changes; homonymy, polysemy; antonymy, synonymy; paronymy, popular etymology; doublets, etc.
