Course objectives
At the end of the course, the student should:
- have a thorough idea of the phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical development of Italian
- have an understanding of the historical and cultural context of this development
- be able to use his knowledge while analyzing and describing specific texts
- be in a position to explain main issues of contemporary Italian against diachronic background.
Syllabus
  • The main topics of the course are as follows:
  • - the linguistic situation in the Italian peninsula after 476 A.D.;
  • from Vulgar Latin to Italian;
  • - the development of the Italian language from its birth in the 9th-10th centuries to the early 16th century;
  • - main periods of the development of Italian;
  • - phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic changes;
  • - previous stages of development compared to modern usage (including the Tobler-Mussafia law);
  • - analysis of relevant texts from the Indovinello veronese to Bembo.
