Prerequisites
In this course we explore the places where art, mathematics and algorithms meet.
The course assumes creative mind, artistic thinking, computer literacy and elementary knowledge of mathematics.

Course objectives
Understand the principles of algorithms and mathematics in art;
Get acquainted with examples of the applied computer art, its history, current trends and future development;
Learn practical skills from the field of algorithmic art;
Realize artistic creations with the aid of computer.
Syllabus
  • Introduction into algorithmic art.
  • Computer-aided creativity in the context of generalized aesthetics.
  • An overview of computer art history.
  • Aesthetically productive functions (periodic and cyclic functions, spiral curves, superformula).
  • Creative algorithms with random parameters (generators of pseudo-random numbers, random distributions).
  • Creative automata and context-free graphics (transformations, rewriting grammars, graftals).
  • Aesthetically productive proportions (golden section in mathematics and arts).
  • Fractal graphics (transformations in complex plane, quaternion projections, space-filling curves, iterated function systems).
  • Chaotic attractors (dynamic systems, models of chaos).
  • Decorative knots (topology, graphs, spatial transformations).
  • Periodic tiling (symmetry, friezes, rosettes, interlocking ornaments).
  • Non-periodic tiling (hierarchical, spiral, aperiodic mosaics).
  • Exact aesthetics (beauty of numbers, mathematical appraisal of proportions, composition and aesthetic information).
