Course objectives

The course deals with the links between literature and culture, synchronously and diachronically. It comprises literary movements with regards to the artistic directions, in the history of culture. Selected literary genres and literary terms are discussed.

Learning outcomes

After finishing the course students:
Understand the issues of history of literature as a part of culture.
Are familiar with characteristics of some major works of world literature and Czech literature.
Are familiar with the basic rules of creatingy some literary genres.
Are familiar with issues of publishing of major literary works in Czech editions and translations

Syllabus

• The development of literary movements in cultural context, from antiquity to the present day.
• Some parallel tendencies with the history of knowledge; the history of compiling encyclopedias.
• Interpretations of selected literary works of various periods and movements; work with primary and secondary literature.
• In seminar lessons, the knowledge acquired in lectures will be applied in the writing of seminar papers.

Teaching methods

The course is based on lectures, it also involves discussions and individual work of students. It contains explanations of historical development, as well as work with texts of primary and secondary literature and their segments.

Assessment methods

Requirements for obtaining the credit are: writing a seminar paper and passing an exam.
