Course objectives
To acquaint students with the multidisciplinary field of information systems. Particular objectives are:
- to introduce basic principles and characteristics of information systems,
- to explain phases of the life cycle of information systems and the activities of information professionals within them,
- to use basic procedures for managing information and database systems (modeling, querying, use of analytical tools, etc.).
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- describe the structure of the information and database system,
- justify the purpose of the information system and its individual parts,
- participate in the design of the information system,
- explain the specifics of information systems in different areas of use (government, health, GIS ...)
- describe the architecture of the database system,
- apply analytical tools in the database system.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to information systems. What is the information system, its role, usefulness. Typical structure and components of the information system, examples. Modern information systems.
  • 2. Reasons for the need for IS for management, their goals.
  • 3. Creation of information systems. Life cycle of IS.
  • 4. System analysis and design.
  • 5. UML.
  • 6. Examples of IS (government, health, GIS ...).
  • 7. Enterprise Information Systems.
  • 8. Applying CASE instruments.
  • 9. Methods of conducting large projects.
  • 10. Introduction to database systems. What is a database management system, its role, use, examples.
  • 11. Processing queries. Basic principles, example. Indexing. Introduction to query optimization. Transaction. Transaction processing properties.
  • 12. Analytical tools. OLAP - Online Analytical Processing. Data mining. Database applications.
