Course objectives
The first goal of the course is to show their functioning and current trends using the examples of Czech / foreign libraries and possibly other memory and cultural institutions;
The second goal of the course is to lead students to professional reading and reflection within the topics discussed in accordance with the course content.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- compare practice in Czech and selected foreign libraries and cultural and memory institutions;
- identify examples of good and bad practice and the possibilities of their transferability to Czech libraries and cultural institutions and activities;
- discuss current challenges in library or publishing practice in an international context;
- in the case of an excursion abroad, use actively acquired vocabulary related to the field, especially in oral communication in the institutions of the excursion
- work analytically with professional sources and anchor a specific topic related to the content of the subject in the synthesis
Syllabus
  • The focus of the course content depends on the specific conditions of the given academic year, which will allow you to choose a destination (domestic, foreign) and relevant libraries or other memory and cultural institutions.
  • As part of the excursion, students will always get to know at least one city library and one academic library. In their environment, issues of architecture, internal equipment, services and library processes and other areas relevant for the given semester (sustainability, work with the community, inclusion, target groups of library educational activities, etc.) are reflected professionally and educationally.
  • In addition to libraries, the program always includes at least one other memory institution and, depending on the conditions, also cultural institutions or events taking place in the given location (publishing house, book fair, book institute, etc.).
  • For comparison with Czech practice, expert commentary by teachers or students is provided.
  • Course participants are informed about the details of the current course content at the beginning of the semester.

Teaching methods
Analytical reading of curatorially recommended sources - primarily as preparation for a professional excursion;
Lecture with problem-oriented questions in the field of field trip (foreign language) - students formulate questions in advance;
Guided professional discussion with practice experts and researchers (according to the specific location of the excursion) - students formulate questions in advance;
Group activities focused on working with information related to the area and the thematic direction of the excursion and synthesis of professional information in the form of a written output (report, article in an online magazine, interview, etc.);
Reflective creative activities accompanying the evaluation of the excursion from the students' point of view
Assessment methods
In order to complete the subject, compulsory participation in the field trip and completion of the tasks assigned during the semester in the seminar are required:
- peer- and teacher-evaluated student activities with the formulation of questions in the languages ​​of the specific destination;
- oral colloquial presentation of outputs accompanying the excursion, reflection of the subject from the point of view of professional topics and the excursion as part of the curriculum of the study program; teacher feedback
