Course objectives
The course, in the form of a field trip and reflective student reading of texts during the semester, aims at a practical introduction to various aspects of library and book operation, using simulations that immersively convey the issue to students. Several key texts/titles of contemporary literature will be used for teaching, which will then be mirrored in the practical excursion (see syllabus). The texts are anchored in topical current affairs based on what is happening in the book market and the preferences of in-demand titles in libraries. The selection of texts is also based on their topicality and reception in the literary environment. The excursion mirrors the set themes and guides the learners to understand the processes of book and literature production (not only in publishing but also in the wider literary field) and how these are mirrored in key library processes, especially acquisition policy and marketing. The aim of the course is to provide innovative and practical insight into the emergence of literature in market mechanisms and their interconnection with library acquisition strategy and lending services, increased attention to the issues raised and a better understanding of the current issues and challenges facing the book market, which are also reflected in the offer of library services from the perspective of the book stock and its updates and changes.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the learner is able to:
- place a book title on the map of literary traffic, draw practical analogies and conclusions from this determination, analyze the title from multiple perspectives (literary, cultural, socio-economic), and navigate critical reception;
- understand the principle of curation, especially from a library or information perspective, but also from a publishing perspective;
- work with documents on the principle of bibliodiversity and use their potential for their individual needs and for future professional practice as a librarian or information specialist;
- to understand acquisition policies and strategies in the context of a particular library or other memory institution in the real field of field practice during a field trip;
- critically consider, in the context of the field trip, issues of library collection building, revision and promotion, including current problematic issues related to libraries and their role as a neutral site (cases of censorship interventions, ambiguity of assigning specific titles to different collections according to the age of users, self-regulation, etc.)
