Course objectives
Knowledge organization (KO) is an area in which traditional philosophical disciplines, such as logic, epistemology and metaphysics blend with modern interdisciplinary disciplines such as cognitive science, sociology of knowledge, or information science. Purpose of the course is to introduce fundamental issues of knowledge organization as an information science field and to connect them with the pillars of scientific thinking.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student
  • a) will have an insight into the knowledge organization (in its theory, methodology and practice),
  • b) will be able to discuss its basic questions and problems,
  • c) will be able efficiently use, analyze, design and evaluate systems and processes in the area of knowledge organization, and
  • d) will be able to provide the method of domain analysis as a method of observing the genesis and transfer of information and knowledge within certain social groups that are connected with the subject of investigation, shared paradigm and mutual communication.
  • Syllabus
    • 1. Subject of knowledge organization. Concepts of data - information - knowledge - wisdom. Knowledge creation. Object and subject. Empirism - rationalism - realism.
    • 2. Knowledge and critical problem of truth. Theory of truth (consensus, coherence, correspondence, adequation). Growth of knowledge (cumulative vs. breakthrough approaches).
    • 3. Knowledge organization area: information system - user - domain. Paradigms of knowledge organization. ASK. Realistic domain model. Domain analysis.
    • 4. Concepts and their representation. Instrumental and formal signs. Nominalism - conceptualism - realism. Content and scope of the concept. Classification of concepts. Definition.
    • 5. Languages. Their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects. Typology of languages. Natural and selection languages.
    • 6. Categorization, classification, faceting. Classification theory (objective and subjective approaches). Classification of sciences.
    • 7. Scientific classification, taxonomy and professional terminology. Semantic networks. Tezaury.
    • 8. Philosophical and informational ontology. Fundamentals of FRBR. Semantic Web.
    • 9. Document and its representation (metadata). Content analysis, indexing, classification. Hermeneutical approaches.
    • 10. Systems of knowledge organization and their typology. Universal classification systems - MDT, DDT, Bliss, Ranganathan.
    • 11. Knowledge organization systems based on native language. Subject authorities.
    • 12. Visualization of knowledge organization system. Positive and negative aspects.

    Assessment methods
    The subject is classified based on: 1) a knowledge test with 25 questions (at least 13 must be answered correctly); 2) final reports on domain analysis, which the student prepares continuously throughout the semester according to assignment of partial tasks; 3) presentation of the student's task in lesson; 4) activity in a lesson (optional).
