Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to describe the systém of modern Japanese language; explain basic linguistic phenomenons on the samples of Japanese; apply their previous language skills as well as the knowledge of general linguistics to a metalinguistic analysis of the modern Japanese language; characterise the Japanese language from a typological point of view; formulate simple definitions of basic grammatical categories; judge the relevance of various linguistic theories for the need of describing a linguistic reality.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: Language in linguistics, basic terminology, language plans
    2. Lexicology: Word as a linguistic unit, Japanese vocabulary, lexical registers
    3. Phonetics: Principles of articulatory phonetics, features of vowels and consonants, phonetic inventory of modern Japanese, IPA, suprasegmental phenomena
    4. Phonology I: Mora vs. syllable, notion of phoneme, phone and alophone, phonologic inventory of modern Japanese
    5. Phonology II: Basic phonological processes, word accent in modern standard Japanese, sequential voicing (rendaku)
    6. Morphology: Lexeme and grameme, morphological processes and enrichment of the lexicon
    7. Morphosyntax: Theory of classification of parts of speech (morphosyntactic categories) in Japanese
    8. Syntax I: Basic syntactic relations, inflection of predicatives (katsuyō) in syntactic relations, basic types of syntactic modification
    9. Syntax II: Grammatical categories of predicatives, functional synsemantic units
    10. Pragmatics: Introduction to pragmalinguistics (semantics vs. pragmatics), Gricean cooperative principle and its maxims
