Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with some ideas and tenets of Cognitive Linguistics with special reference to English and Japanese. Some of the Japanese grammatical issues, such as classifiers, case markers, implicit subjects and voice alternations, will be discussed under the notions like prototype, animacy, empathy, perspective, subjectivity, intersubjectivity and process/goal-oriented construals.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to find interesting expressions in everyday life and to analyze them from a Cognitive Linguistics point of view. As a result, students will acquire deeper understanding of Japanese language and culture.
