Course objectives
This course´s focus is aimed at language in communication in broadest sense. Lectures will be devoted to:
a) Interpersonal communication - spontaneous and informal communication between individuals, that is less formalized, most natural, the least influenced by psychological and cultural limitations, the best for getting know other people and information. But - can we even communicate without trying to influence the other part? Is manipulation part of our everyday life? How do we use language to influence people and make impression on others?
b) Mass communication - how is language used in commercials and political propaganda? What are the manipulation techniques used by media? Does censure still exist in our society? Can we tell out loud what we think? Did we lose (and if yes, how many times) the freedom of speech?
Prerequisites for granting the credits: active participation in discussions on given topic.
