Course objectives

Basic geographical, political, social and economic characteristics of contemporary Bulgaria, customs, traditions and characteristics of Bulgarian people.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of modern Bulgarian history, have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of Bulgarian social life, have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of comparative study of Bulgarian language and literature.

• 3. Inhabitants, cities
• 4. Bulgarians and religious life
• 5. Political situation after 1989
• 6. Economic situation
• 7. Bulgaria and relations with neighbouring countries (Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkey)
• 8. Specific features of the Bulgarian history in comparison with the Czech history
• 9. Cultural places of interest I (pre-Slavonic period, Thraks, Greeks, Romans, etc.)
• 10. Cultural places of interest II (middle age state, Byzantine ruling, Ottoman ruling)
• 11. Cultural places of interest III (19. and 20. century)
• 12. General repetition

Teaching methods

One lecture and one seminar per week, e-learning.

Assessment methods

One paper presentation on the chosen topic during the seminar, using PowerPoint presentation (written texts will not be accepted if there is no valid reason, f. e. study stays abroad). Student need to present his paper on date he signed for. Oral exam.
