Course objectives
Slovenian/Croatian/Serbian/Bulgarian language course for beginners. At the end of the course students will be able to understand and make use of basic vocabulary, grammar and phonetic specifics of Slovenian/Croatian/Serbian/Bulgarian.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to describe new grammar phenomena acquired in this semester and use the knowledge in spoken and written interaction. By the means of acquiring new vocabulary and grammar they can create text or speak about related topics. Students are able to understand written text and interpret it.
Syllabus
  • Slovenian:
  • Introduction. Who are you? Where are you from? How old are you? What do you do for living? States, inhabitants, language, numbers, profession. Verb to be, negation of verb to be. Noun: declination, number, nominative case. Adjective: what kind of? Daily phrases. Greetings. Questions about the way we feel. Asking for something. Saying thank you. Invitations. Excuses. Negation of verb and adjective. Questionnaires. Time. Months, dates, days in week, parts of the day, what’s the time. Accusative case. Genitive case. Possessive pronoun.
  • Croatian:
  • Basic vocabulary and phrases, accent, dialects, phonetic changes, cases, pronouns, adverbs, present tense of a verb „to be“, present tense terminations (-am, -im, -em, -jem), modal verbs, prepositions.
  • Serbian:
  • Grammar: Verb to be, nominative singular noun, personal and possessive pronouns, locative of nouns in the singular with preposition u and at, the basic numbers, verbs in the present, verb to have, locative plural of nouns, adjective and pronouns, genitive singular with the prepositions before, after, of, to, from, verbs in the present tense on -em and -am, genitive plural nouns, modal verbs, accusative singular and plural nouns, adjectives and pronouns, numbers, accusative singular and plural with preposition in and on and with verbs of movement, Instrumental singular and plural nouns, adjectives and pronouns, past tense of the verbs ending with -ti, nouns and adjectives locative with preposition in and on, past tense of verbs ending with -ći, dative singular and plural of nouns, adjectives and pronouns, verbs to wish, want and can in past tense, dative with the preposition to, accusative singular and plural of nouns, adjectives and pronouns, descriptive adjectives.
  • Bulgarian:
  • Bulgarian language in the context of Slavonic and Balkan languages. Introduction to Bulgarian grammar. Bulgarian phonetics. Bulgarian alphabet. Basic Bulgarian grammar rules, vocabulary and phrases for beginners.
  • Living, rooms and furniture. Gender and number of nouns. States, nationalities and languages. Gender and number of adjectives. Colours and clothes. Demonstrative and interrogative pronouns. Family. Declension in present tense. Human body. Irregular plural. Definite article of nouns. Leisure. Infinitive. Modal verbs. Daily routine. Future tense and grammatical aspect. Weather and seasons. Future tense of copula. Vacation. Definite article of adjectives.

Teaching methods
Seminar (six hours per week), home preparation, in the seminar a combination of teacher-led activities and student-cantered/group learning activities will be employed.
Assessment methods
Regular attendance, homework and home preparation required. Upon fulfilling all requirements listed students must pass a final test.
