Prerequisites
Fluent knowledge of Serbian language, survey type knowledge of elder Serbian literature, capability to work with literary text.

Course objectives
Lecture brings the survey of Serbian poetry since 1945.In prose it is dedicated first to literature overcoming the schematism of war novels, continuing with a generation of authors of so called experimental prose, being generally similar to French new novel. We follow minutely incoming generation of sixties. Furthermore, we discuss the generation of so called Serbian neo-realists, authors working with a new lexicon (dialects and especially slang). Together with neo-realists the lecture presents also the prosaic stream of post-modern poetics. Apart from neo-realists were authors of modern urban prose (jeans literature). Lecture notices also the nationalistic stream, which starts to takes place in Serbian literature since the beginning of eighties of 20th century. At the end it endeavors to adumbrate the style and thematic diversity of literature at the turning point of the century. At the end of the course we submit also a survey of Serbian poetry. After absolving of the subject the student would be capable to analyze trends in Serbian literature after 1945 and to understand the expression of Serbian nationalism in the literature after eighties and nineties of 20th century

  • 1. Schematic literature and national deliberating and first signals of modifications in prose. 2. Serbian experimental prose. 3. Generation of Kiš, Pekić, and Kovać. 4. Serbian neo-realists. 5. Postmodernism. 6. Serbian urban prose. 7. David Albahari, Svetislav Basara and other formal experimentalists. 8. Nationalistic and populistic prose of eighties and nineties. 9. Prose at the turn point of the millennium. 10. Traditional stream in Serbian poetry (Maksimović, Massuka, etc). 11. Neo-symbolism, neo-classicism, neo-romanticism. 12. Poetry inspired by a myth and folklore, neo-verists. 13. Poetry at the turn point of millennium and final recapitulation.

Teaching methods
Seminars are based on regular reading of works of modern Serbian literature and its analysis within the framework of the seminar.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. Subject is completed thru oral exam.
