Course objectives

Students of the classical archaeology in the study program minor are required to pass at least 6 weeks of practical training (240 working hours) on archaeological excavations during their studies. if possible also abroad in the territory of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations or in the regions strongly influenced. Primarily is recommended to take part in the excavations of the Institute of Department of Archaeology and Museology Faculty of Arts Masaryk University (sites: Priniatikos Pyrgos, Oxa, Bibracte etc.) or abroad in the territory of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, alternatively in the excavations provided by cooperating institutions such as The Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Brno (site Mušov and its background). The main aim of the course is to acquire professional practical trainning and direct engagement of students in archaeological research and get involved in an scientific, preferably international team.

Learning outcomes

After successfull passing the course, students will be able to:
- orientate in the specifics and strategy of the field excavation on the site or region
- excavate the fundamental archeological field situations under the supervision of the tutor or field specialist
- participate on the field documentation (drawing and photographic) and provide basic geodetic survey
- arrange primary registration and basic laboratory treatment of the excavated materials, or obtain their primary documentation
- cooperate in the research team under the supervision of the tutor or field specialist

Syllabus

• - excavations and fundamental interpretation of the field situations
• - documentations of excavated situations (drawing, photographic documentation, total station measuring)
• - fill the required informations in field forms
• - Post-excavation and laboratory works (sorting, cleaning and inventorying of the archaeological artefacts)
• - primary description, documentation and cataloguing, recording into the databasis
