Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is presentation of special problems/issues, topics and methods actually searched by classical archaeology and related disciplines.

Osnova
  • Content of each course is created separatelly and actually for each semester. The lectures and courses are presented by leading scholars and experst from abroad. Spring 2022: The topography and economy of Ostia Antica. Trade and production Letizia Ceccarelli The course will cover the history, topography and economy of Ostia Antica from the Republican period to Late Antiquity. Differently from Pompeii, the city offers an insight into everyday life, housing, religion, trade and production until at least the 6th century AD. Ostia was the river port of Rome and continued to have a dynamic relationship with the Urbs, even after the construction of the harbour at Portus, 3km to the north. Special emphasis will be placed on the results of recent archaeological investigations that offer a new interpretation on the development of the city. Structure of the course 1. Overview of the city and the history of the excavations 2. Early Ostia: the colony and the castrum. City development from mid-4th to 1st century BCE 3 Early Imperial Ostia 4. The Forum: results of the Ostia Forum Project 5. The construction of the Claudian and Trajan harbours and the river port at Ostia: results of the geoarcheological analysis and the Southampton University and British School at Rome’s Portus Project 6. Trade and commerce: Square of the Corporations, tabernae, warehouses and the import of goods 7. Public areas: the theatre, baths, temples and shrines 8. The housing of Ostia from the Late Republican period: results of the excavation at the Schola di Traiano 9. The Severan transformation of the city 10. Pottery and food production in Ostia 11. Late Antique Ostia and its economy 12. Late Antique cults. Mithrea, Christian and Jewish communities 13. The Ostia Synagogue: results of the OSMAP project 14 The coast in late antiquity: results of the Porta Marina Project 15. The necropolis at Ostia and Isola Sacra: results of recent excavations
