Course objectives
Students completing the course are given an overview of material culture, sources, topical questions and approaches to their solution regarding the archaeology of Crete.
Learning outcomes
Student who has completed the course:
- has a good factual overview
- understands and can explain the specifics of Cretan archaeology
- is able to implement partial research projects

  • 1. History and organisation of research
  • 2. Early prehistoric periods (Palaeolithic and Neolithic) - an overview of new projects
  • 3. Early Minoan Period: cemeteries, settlements, material culture
  • 4. Protopalatial period: palatial centres, their architecture and function, material culture
  • 5. Neopalatial period: palaces, hilltop sanctuaries
  • 6. Neopalatial period: material culture, interpretation issues
  • 7. Final palatial period: Knossos, material culture, Crete and Greek mainland
  • 8. End of the Bronze Age: LM IIIB-C - Early Protogeometric Period
  • 9. Early Iron Age
  • 10. Historical periods
