Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide the students with an overview of history and principal archaeological cultures of the ancient Near East and Egypt from the emergence of Neolithic culture to the 2nd millennium BCE, including the development of their material culture (including art). The students shall got acquainted with the principal categories of archaeological evidence known from the area and period of interest. The attention shall be paid to the principal orientation of the students in area (historical geography of the region) and time (absolute as well as relative chronology), to the description of long-term development trends, specific characteristics of individual archaeological cultures as well as mutual cultural connections and influences between particular regions and cultures.
Learning outcomes
After attending the course, the student shall be able to:
- Identify and summarize important characteristics of the principal archaeological cultures of the ancient Near East and Egypt, including their dating;
- identify and describe basic artistic and architectural monuments and archaeological finds of the cultures of the ancient Near East and Egypt;
- Identify and discuss the basic development phenomena and stages (including methodology) of archaeological research focusing on the ancient Near East and Egypt, including key figures (researchers), terms and principal scientific literature.
Syllabus
  • The course shall provide a concise overview of archaeological cultures of the ancient Near East and Egypt from the emergence of Neolithic culture to the 2dn millennium BCE:
  • 1. Geography, topography and chronological systems of the region (ancient Near East, Egypt) – basic terminology;
  • 2. Neolithisation of Egypt and ancient Near East, overview of Neolithic cultures: Fayum A culture, Badari and Naqada, Bútó-Maádí cultures; PPNA, PPNB a PPNC cultures, Late Neolithic cultures in the Levant, Neolithic cultures in Jordan, Hassuna – Samarra complex, Halaf culture;
  • 3. Chalcolithic period in the Near East: Ubaid and Uruk culture, Djemdet-Nasr culture and emergence of complex society in Egypt (Early dynastic period)
  • 4. Early Bronze Age in the Near East: EBA in southern and northern Levant, EBA in Jordan, Early Dynastic in Mesopotamia, Sumerian Empire, Old Akkadian Empire, Third dynasty of Ur
  • 5. 3rd and 2nd millennium in Egypt: Old Kingdom, First Intermediate Period, Middle Kingdom, Second Intermediate Period, New Kingdom
  • 6. 2nd millennium in the Near East: Middle Bronze Age in southern and northern Levant, Old Babylonian empire
  • 7. Great Powers in the 2dn millennium BCE: Mitanni, Hittites and Egypt – diplomacy, war and co-existence 8. Late Bronze Age: southern and northern Levant
