Course objectives
Early Christianity and its relationship to creative expression; the formation of Christian iconography and its sources; the chronology of early Christian art and the gradual development of its function: the art of catacombs and sarcophagi, Constantinian architecture and the beginnings of monumental Church art, mosaics, their development in the 5th century and in the Justinian period.
Syllabus
  • Early christian art as the creative element of the greek and roman civilisation, negations of the figural art by the christian authorities. Christian iconography and her specific problems. Chronology of the early christian art, stylistical evolution of the early christian sarcophagi, mosaics and paintings, luxury arts. Specific problems of the art of the late antiquity.
