Course objectives
The aim of the course is to check whether students themselves are able to understand selected passages from the work by Lucianus.
Learning outcomes
The students should be able to understand, translate selected passages (see Course Contents) from the work by Lucianus comment on their linguistic characteristics and historical context.
The students also understand the literary and historical context, on the basis of which they are able to interpret the piece of literature and understand and can explain the changes in the later Greek language.
Syllabus
  • Reading, translation and thorough interpretation of one of the Lucian`s dialogues according to student`s own choice. Reading and translating one of the Lucian`s dialogues according to student`s own choice.
  • Use of dictionaries, commentaries and grammar books.
  • Linguistic analysis of the text.
  • Historical background of the work.

Teaching methods
The course is not being taught in the standard form, but through the consultations during which the students solve the actual problems and answer questions concerning the text prescribed for translation.
Assessment methods
The knowledge of the texts is tested by translating selected passages into Czech and commenting on their linguistic features and historical and social context. The examination is oral, students have time for preparing the translation. Examination takes place in the examination period as well as during the semester (in the latter case, it is necessary to make appointment personally or by e-mail).
