Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide basic information about the proto-historical and historical development of Latin in the Indo-European context and in relationship to the Italic languages of ancient Italy.
The course Latin Linguistics also introduces students to the contemporaneous linguistic research into Latin, which is mostly based on Dutch school of functional linguistics. In this approach, an important role is played by pragmatics, which provides metodological tools for connection between Latin linguistics with literary oreinted research into ancient texts. Besides that, the course provides more detailed insigth into the theory of grammaticalization, already studied in the course Late Latin.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student should be able to:
- describe the proto-historical and historical development of Latin in the Indo-European context and various language changes;
- describe the development of Latin language and its Indo-european connections from the phonological and morphological points of view;
- describe the development of latin perfectum;
- describe main features of functional linguistic approach to Latin;
- describe functional approach to selected linguistic phenomena (see Course Contents) and compare opinions defended by different scholars;
- interpret the use of selected phenomena in the texts from the point of view of their communicative function.
