- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to give students a basic insight into the grammatical system of Latin, to teach them to work with dictionaries and to understand easier Latin texts.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students:
- will have a basic orientation in the grammatical system of Latin;
- will be able to use grammar tables and identify the different forms;
- have an overview of basic Latin dictionaries and be able to search them;
- be able to understand easier Latin texts. - Syllabus
- Lesson 1: brief introduction to Latin as a language, explanation of how to work with dictionaries (structure of entries in the dictionary, etc.), pronunciation in Latin. Latin sayings, examples of Latin in today's world.
- Lesson 2: work with grammar tables - nouns, prepositions, and the prepositional system of verbs. Identifying isolated forms and understanding simple sentences. Latin sayings, reading excerpts from Catonis disticha.
- Lesson 3: work with tables - adjectives, gradations and comparisons, and conjunctions with adjectives. Latin sayings, reading excerpts from Publilius Syrus, Sententiae. Logos of the security forces.
- Lesson 4: work with tables -perfect verb system, pronouns and relative clauses. Latin sayings, reading excerpts from Ovid, Metamorphoses; Martialis; Publilius Syrus, Sententiae; Hyginus, Fabulae.
- Lesson 5: work with tables - nominal verbal forms and infinitive constructions. Latin sayings, reading selected fables from Hermeneumatha Pseudodositheana and a text on the Gallic gods from Caesar's De bello Gallico. Inscriptions.
- Lesson 6: work with tables - conjunctive subordinate clauses. Latin sayings, reading excerpts from Caesar's De bello Gallico (beginning of the work and on the families of the Gauls), the beginning of Cicero's first speech against Catiline. Inscriptions on the statues of St. John of Nepomuk.
- Lesson 7: work with tables - numerals and calendar. Latin sayings, reading of text samples relating to Christmas. Vulgate, Gospel according to Luke, Christmas carols.
