Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give students a basic insight into the grammatical system of Latin, to teach them to work with dictionaries and to understand easier Latin texts.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students: - will have a basic orientation in the grammatical system of Latin;
- will be able to use grammar tables and identify the different forms;
- have an overview of basic Latin dictionaries and be able to search them;
- be able to understand easier Latin texts.
Syllabus
  • Lesson 1: Latin sayings, reading texts from Caesar's De bello Gallico (animals in the Hercynian forest) and Cicero's letters.
  • Lesson 2: Latin sayings, reading extracts from Catullus' poems and the beginning of Virgil's Aeneid. Excerpt from Cosmas' Chronicle. Inscription.
  • Lesson 3: Latin sayings, reading excerpts from Eutropius' Breviarium ab urbe condita and Livy's Annales. Inscriptions.
  • Lesson 4: reading of texts relating to Easter. Vulgate - Gospel according to John, Stabat mater, Victimae paschali, Vidi aquam.
  • Lesson 5: Latin sayings, reading excerpts from Sallust's Catilinae coniuratio, Inscriptions.
  • Lesson 6: Latin sayings, description of the explosion of Vesuvius from Pliny's Epistulae. Examples of inscriptions from Pompeii.
  • Lesson 7: Latin sayings, reading of extracts from Virgil's Eclogae and Seneca's Epistulae morales ad Lucilium, Sponsio sollemnis at conferring doctorates honoris causa.
