Course objectives
The course is designed for students of single-subject studies of the Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Latin Language and Literature as a supplement to the Didactics of the Latin Language I. Its aim is to develop students’ theoretical knowledge of Latin didactics by applying particular didactic concepts in practical tasks. The focus is especially on the transfer of general didactic concepts applicable in Latin teaching, which is in many respects a highly specific matter.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- apply basic pedagogical and didactic concepts in Latin teaching with regard to the specifics of Latin in comparison with living languages;
- propose and describe one’s own didactic approach to Latin teaching with regard to particular school types (four-year high schools, eight-year high schools, medical schools, various types of colleges offering courses of Latin terminology);
- propose particular and effective means of language acquisition;
- thoroughly analyze particular issues related to the goals of Latin teaching.
Syllabus
  • The course is based on the syllabus of the Didactics of the Latin Language I and offers practical tasks and activities related to individual topics covered in Latin didactics.
  • 1. various approaches to foreign language teaching, specifics of Latin as a dead language;
  • 2. various goals of Latin teaching with regard to various school types (vocational vs. high schools), students’ age, number of instruction units etc.;
  • 3. comparison of approaches to Latin teaching (traditional vs. alternative methods);
  • 4. Latin teaching practice in the Czech Republic and abroad, and its reflexion among classical philologists;
  • 5. textbooks and teaching materials for individual methods, including e-materials;
  • 6. Latin as a tool for developing reading and analytical skills;
  • 7. Latin as a languge of the European culture;
  • 8. the so-called Living Latin and the limits of its use in class;
  • 9. motivation for promoting the Latin language, literature, and culture

Teaching methods
Discussion about the didactic topics covered in class, reading assignments (didactic texts), group work with secondary sources, presentation of particular didactic issues.
Assessment methods
Paper on an assigned scholarly text, presentation of one’s own solution to a particular didactic issue, class attendance (75%). All written materials produced within the course become a part of student’s portfolio.
