Course objectives
The main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to introduce the students to the situation at the Roman literary scene prior to 240 B.C. (the starting point of the idependent Roman literary tradition);
to inform the students about the periodization of the Roman literature and the main characteristics of each literary period;
to point at the links between the Greek and Roman literature and the Roman contribution to the body of the ancient literature.
At the end of the course students have a general overview of the Roman literature and its main representatives.

  • 8.-9. Augustian Period (Golden Age)

  • 12.-13. Post-Silver Period (Decline of Roman literature)

Assessment methods
The course is taught as lectures. Written test based on the lectured matter. Participation in the classes is recommended. The students with insufficient participation will be tested both by written test and oral examination. Successfull completion of the course is one of the prerequisites of the qualifying exam.
