Course objectives
The course is an introduction into the subject of Latin literature of the Bohemian Middle Ages from its beginnings to the end of the 13th century.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia up until the 13th century; to explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature; to describe connections of the Latin literature in Bohemia in this period with the development of the Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature; to evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of Latin literature in Bohemia in this period; to analyze language and style of selected treatises.

  • 1. Medieval Latin literature in Bohemia (definition, content, development of research).
  • 2. Characteristics of Medieval Latin literature.
  • 3. Development of Bohemian Latin literature until the end of the 13th century: Hagiography (Wenceslas and other legends).
  • 4. Historiography (Cosmas).
  • 5. Religious lyric poetry (hymns, sequences, tropes, cantilenas).
  • 6. "Drama".
  • 7. Sermons.
  • 8. Diplomatics and rhetoric (charters, epistolography, formularies, dictamina).
