Course objectives
The course will introduce students to the ancient concept of creative imitation and the possibilities of its interpretation. Focus will be on ancient centos, which will be compared with several other texts related in terms of genre and theme. At the end of the course, students should be able to:
describe the principles of cento technique;
discuss the historical and literary context of late antique centos;
translate and interpret works under consideration;
apply selected methods of interpretation to literary texts;
name topoi employed in individual genres of ancient literature.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction - late antique cento in cultural and historical context.
  • 2. Possibilities of interpretation of the cento: perspective of genology, theory of intertextuality, reception aesthetics, hermeneutics.
  • 3.-4. Intertextual reading of the cento Medea by Hosidius Geta.
  • 5.-6. Critical reading of the tragedy Medea by Seneca.
  • 7. Comparative analysis of the plot of the tragedy Medea by both Seneca and Hosidius.
  • 8. Intertextual reading of the Epithalamium Fridi by Luxorius.
  • 9. Intertextual reading of the Cento Nuptialis by Ausonius.
  • 10. Comparative analysis of the cento epithalamia in the context of late antique tradition of wedding poetry.
  • 11.-12. Intertextual reading of selected cento epyllia on mythological themes and their comparison with Ovid´s Metamorphoses.

Teaching methods
Lectures (reading, translation and interpretation of texts). Homework is required.
Assessment methods
Active participation in lectures (class discussions of assigned texts and research papers). Presentation and defence of a seminar paper (text analysis); upon agreement the paper can be prepared collectively.

Credit evaluation note: Pro studenty doktorského studia (latinská medievistika) platí počet kreditů 10.
