Adaptation Past, Present, and Future

Osnova

1. The first lecture will consider adaptation studies from Eisenstein and Bluestone to Brian McFarlane, focusing on the question of fidelity. 2. The second lecture will consider the present state of adaptation studies from Cartmell and Whelehan's 1999 collection through Simone Murray's book on the adaptation industry. The leading figures I'll discuss will be Robert Stam and Linda Hutcheon. My focus will be on the broadening of adaptation studies and its search for a conceptual center more powerful than the rejection of fidelity discourse. 3. The third lecture will look into the future to hazard guesses about what I've come to think of as Adaptation Studies 3.0. It will consider the relations between adaptation and other modes of intertextuality, especially translation and illustration, and between textual and biological adaptation. My leading argument will concern the power of adaptation to destabilize traditional aesthetics and textual studies.
