Course objectives
The course will introduce students – by the means of workshops, interactive lectures, and short-term internship at publishing houses, literary or translation agencies, galleries or museums – to methods, strategies and proven work approaches in selected fields of working with texts, in various language contexts, forms, and intermedia formats. The students will also be provided by a set of rational argumentative and interpretative devices, which will enable them to develop their abilities, acquire intercultural skills, and further develop their constructive-critical thinking and actions in a given field, while working with text output.
Learning outcomes
students will be able to:
- recognize the specifics and the issues within a commission to work with texts in the fields of art and literature;
- establish principal strategies of dealing with a commission, based on the area of discourse;
- formulate a commission and the required communicative function of the target product;
- formulate the requirements for text output in various areas of work with text (i.e. translation, proofreading, review, critique, news report, abstract);
- review, in a constructive-critical way, various forms of text output (commission assignment, translation, review);
- suggest corrections to insufficient texts;
- proofread a basic translation of a text within the informative genres in the fields of literature or art (as translated into Czech);
- create a basic text with a dominant informative function in the fields of art or literature.
Syllabus
  • The main topics of the lectures are: culture, dimension, convergention and divergention of cultures, cultural identity, individdualism and collectivism, hierarchy and social distance, particularism and universalism, nonverbal communication, stereotypisation and prejudice-making, entocentrism and identity, culture and economics, multiculturality, ethics of intercultural communication.
