Course objectives
The goal of the course is to learn defined lexicon which is divided into seven thematic areas. The student will interact with the lector (native speaker). Although the main focus is given on the acquisition of the CSL lexicon, the will be also a practical training of the grammar included in the obligatory course Czech Sign Language II. At the end of the course, students know the basic lexicon defined by the seven thematic areas. They master passively and actively the use of the lexical units, both in isolation and in sentences, according to given situations.
Learning outcomes
Students have the basic lexical repertoire and they are able to sign in every-day situations. However, their performance is simple and often, they may look for a while to find the right expression.
Syllabus
  • thematic areas: 1. Family: family relations (broader family), family members description, pets; 2. personal information: Who am I? My CV; 3. Seasons: seasonal activities, weather, clothes according to seasons; 4. traveling: Czech Republic (our country and its culture), traveling and stay in hotels, famous cities and countries of the world, their culture, services while traveling; 5. Meals and drinks: drinks, meals, basic types of fruits and vegetables; 6. University: organization structure of the university, studies and student activities.

Teaching methods
- practical training in CSL - work with the lector - demonstration methods: work with image and video
Assessment methods
It is required to attend the lectures (at least 70 %), to do the homework; and to report 17 hours of volunteer work in the Deaf community. At least 70 % of the homework points must be gained. After a student sends the homework to the teacher, the teacher evaluates the homework and sends it back to the student to do the correction. Such corrected homework is re-evaluated by the teacher just once (for each homework). 17 hours of practical training in the community.
