Course objectives
The course wants to introduce students to a linguistic approach known as Axiomatic Functionalism (AF) which follows the tradition of Ferdinand de Saussure, Prague School and above all functionalism of the French linguist André Martinet.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able
- to explain the differences between AF and other structuralist and functionalist approaches
- to assess where AF is more effective in explaining linguistic problems and where not
- to summarize and formulate the principles of this approach
- to apply them to morphology, syntax and semantics

  • Linguistic theory and metodology of description
  • The use of the set theory in linguistic description
  • Classification of semiotic systems and the theory of sign
  • Morphological analysis and the problem of so-called cranberry morphemes
  • Synonymy, homonymy, allomorphy
  • Syntax
