Course objectives
The aim of the course (which is the continuation of the course MED05) is to prove to what extent Roman literature follows the Greek patterns, but at the same time to emphasize Roman independence in the imitation of Greek literature. The course involves a survey of genres of Latin literature from its beginning to the so-called Crisis of the Third Century. At the end of this course, students should be able to nominate the most important Latin writings and to classify them according to their genre characteristics. They should also be able to intepret the particular Latin writings on account of individual reading of their Czech translations.

  • 1. Main periods of the Roman literature; scientific literature.
  • 2. Folk literature: oracles, songs and stories in the Pre-literary Period.
  • 3. Epic poetry; drama of the Archaic Period (esp. Plautus a Terentius).
  • 4. Prose of the Archaic Period.
  • 5. The origin of poetic satire (Lucilius); neoterics.
  • 6. Philosophical epic poetry (Lucretius).
  • 7. Cicero.
  • 8. Historiography of the Cicero's Period (esp. Caesar and Sallustius).
  • 9. Two generation of poets of the Augustean Period (Vergil, Horace).
  • 10. Elegiac poets (Tibullus and Propertius, Ovidius).
  • 11. Historiography and scientific literature.
  • 12. Poetry of the Silver Age.
  • 13. Prose of the Silver Age (esp. Seneca, Petronius, Tacitus and Apuleius).

Teaching methods
The course is provided as lectures. Students are required to attend the lectures regulary and to read and interpret recommended Czech translations according to the teacher's demand. With help of their knowledge from the course MED05 students also assign the writings according to their genres as well as seek their Greek resources.
Assessment methods
To obtain the credits, students have to succeed in the following examination covering the issues from both courses (MED05 and MED06): written part: knowledge test, and oral part: discussion about the individual reading and supplementary examination.
